Amoud University, being the most popular institution of higher learning in Somaliland, is conscious of the fact that it has to influence every minute sector of the country even as it aspires to be a paragon of excellence in education and scholarship in the Horn of Africa, as well as a pioneer in the promotion of understanding between the various cultures and communities in the region.
This is a no mean feat, and requires that well-focused and highly trained manpower be churned into all sectors of the economy and in every part of the country. This is well in line with Amoud’s objective of pioneering a tradition of higher education in Somaliland and training a new breed of professionals. The establishment of graduate programmes at the university is part of the university’s strategy of improving service delivery in the country through production of highly qualified and well trained human resource.
Our graduate programmes are advanced academic degrees intended to produce individuals who demonstrate a mastery and high-order overview of specific fields of study or areas of professional practice. The programmes are written to world class standards and are taught by highly qualified and well-trained personnel. As such, graduates of these programmes are posited to possess advanced knowledge of a specialized body of theoretical and applied topics; high order skills in analysis, critical evaluation, professional application; and the ability to solve complex problems and to think rigorously and independently.
The rules and regulations put in place provide a basis and operational framework for developing the desired manpower necessary for developing the university, the community and the country, and for export to other regions. They reflect the desire of Amoud University to operate within frameworks acceptable locally and internationally. Such rules and regulations are specific to Amoud University but are no doubt consistent with the rules and regulations for the award of graduate degrees around the world.
The School of Research & Postgraduate Studies (SPG&S) of Amoud University co-ordinates all postgraduate programmes in the University and reports on the same to Senate. The postgraduate programmes include postgraduate certificates, postgraduate diplomas and higher degrees (Masters/Doctoral). The SPG&S is responsible for:
Initiation and maintenance of postgraduate programmes in the university;
- Attracting qualified students into these programmes;
- Attracting qualified lecturers and supervisors;
- Maintaining high level research at the postgraduate and post-doctoral level;
- Ensuring that studies are completed in the stipulated times and that research findings are disseminated to the users so that they are of benefit to Somaliland and generally to scholarship.
- Making recommendations for award of Scholarships, Fellowships and SPG&S Grant when such awards are available.
